In short

Local search results matter in B2B as well: many decision-makers deliberately search for providers with a regional connection, following patterns like "agency + city". A well-maintained Google Business Profile, consistent company data and locally optimised pages usually improve visibility for such queries considerably.

Local SEO is widely seen as a topic for restaurants and retail – a misconception. Around 46% of all Google searches have local intent (Google), and B2B decision-makers research just like consumers do: they search for "IT service provider Hanover", "toolmaking Brunswick" or "Shopware agency near me". Companies that do not appear for these queries simply do not exist for a relevant share of regional demand – no matter how good their offering is.

This becomes particularly visible in the so-called Local Pack, the highlighted map listings above the organic results: businesses listed there receive 126% more traffic and 93% more actions such as calls or website clicks than businesses ranking in positions 4 to 10 (BrightLocal). For B2B providers with a regional catchment area, the Local Pack is therefore one of the most effective free sources of visibility available.

Why regional proximity matters in B2B

B2B business relationships are long-term and built on trust. Many companies prefer partners who are available for workshops, on-site appointments or short-notice support – especially for complex projects such as ERP integrations or B2B e-commerce platforms. A regional provider also signals commitment: the same legal framework, the same time zone, a personal point of contact. Local search results are frequently the first touchpoint where this preference meets a concrete offer – often with a high probability of conversion, because those who search regionally usually already have a concrete need.

The most important local SEO measures for B2B providers

  • Maintain your Google Business Profile: Complete information, suitable categories, current photos and regular posts
  • Consistent company data (NAP): Name, address and phone number identical everywhere – on the website, in business directories and on portals
  • LocalBusiness markup: Structured data based on Schema.org that clearly communicates location and service area to search engines
  • Regional landing pages: Dedicated pages for relevant cities and regions – with individual content rather than a swapped-out city name
  • Build reviews: Actively request reviews from business customers and respond to them visibly
  • Regional links: Listings with chambers of commerce, business development agencies, industry associations and regional networks

Added to this is the growing importance of mobile research: mobile local searches are growing 50% faster than general mobile searches (Google). In a business context, too, the search for a provider often starts on the go – for example on a smartphone between two appointments. A complete business profile with a call button and correct directions turns this situation directly into a contact. Getting started does not have to be elaborate: an inventory of your current visibility – which search terms with local intent already generate impressions, and how your business profile compares to the competition – usually reveals the biggest gaps quickly. Many measures, such as correcting inconsistent company data, can then be implemented with manageable effort.

Local SEO does not run itself

Outdated opening hours, inconsistent address data or unanswered reviews look particularly unprofessional in B2B. In our experience, local SEO only delivers results with continuous maintenance – a one-off setup is not enough.

How strongly local visibility should be prioritised depends on the business model: a machine manufacturer selling worldwide benefits less than an IT service company with a regional service area. For most B2B service providers, however, local search results are an underestimated channel with comparatively low competition, because many competitors neglect it. A well-conceived SEO strategy therefore combines national visibility for specialist topics with local presence for purchase-ready regional queries.
